Synopsis

The purpose of this study was to create a graphic novel illustrating the main points relating neurology, trauma, and art therapy. Information gathered from existing scholarship was compiled and organized to create a psychoeducational tool for clients and clinicians. The graphic novel exists as a means of disseminating pertinent information to recipients of therapy who may have experienced trauma. This therapeutic tool is the result of extrapolating and translating complex information into understandable imagery that may be more accessible than written scholarship. The overlap of trauma, art therapy, and neurology is a burgeoning topic within the realm of art therapy research. New technologies are providing insight about the brain that can be used by therapists, especially those working with individuals with trauma history. While much information exists on the relationships of these three topics, the scholarship is often inaccessible to those receiving therapy. This work examines the academic potential of comics by incorporating the medium as scholarly writing. A review of relevant literature also includes material on graphic novels as an effective means of sharing information. The graphic novel After the Storm reflects a personal exploration into unfamiliar topics and presents as a psychoeducational tool to be used by therapists. The impact of construction and integration of the comic medium into my own art practices and therapeutic work is examined. The process of developing the project and potential future use are also explored.
